Chabad on The Coast

The Design Brief

Originally a 1930s synagogue founded by Austrian Jews who had fled to Israel, this space was untouched for many years until Chabad on the Coast began searching for a suitable space to house their growing community of young professionals in Tel Aviv. We were charged with completely renewing the space while carefully preserving its rich history and spirit.

What we created

A delicately simple, comprehensive design that brings an invigorated spirit to the interior walls and precious items housed within them. Fully custom carpentry and artifact restoration anchors the heart of this transformation. Unique hand-crafted lighting elements were created and hung as a reflection of the youthful, light-filled spirit of this place of worship and of each individual who attends their Shabbat services, and many community events.

Our Main Challenge

Restorationa nd preservation had to be taken into consideration during all phases and elements of the redesign.

For example:

All of the heavy plaques that once covered the walls were photographed and framed one-by-one, creating museum-like displays for the prayer books found, some dating back to the late 1800s. The new Memorial Wall was conceptualized together with new donors who would be building this new synagogue. Every piece of the founded furniture was restored, including the central Aron whose top frame was rebuilt with inset lighting and CNC-cut geometry featuring the same Hebrew verse from the original frame.
